A Receding Gum Lift Procedure Is Minimally Invasive

Receding gum lift surgery has evolved. New methods take a fraction of the time that previous treatment options required, enable the treatment of numerous teeth in one session and best of all, are minimally-invasive surgical procedures with much shorter, simpler recovery periods.

Traditional receding gum lift procedures are not minimally invasive

Traditional treatments frequently call for procedures to graft new gum tissue to replace that which has receded. They typically require multiple appointments and multiple surgeries, each with a recovery period that can be lengthy. In addition to this, the grafted gum tissue is fragile and must be treated carefully and protected during the recovery period to ensure its success.

Because traditional gum lifts are typically complicated procedures, most dentists opt to treat only one or two teeth per session. Each session requires its own recovery and healing time, and the healing process has to be completed on a previous gum lift before a new one can be attempted. If a patient has extensive or multiple areas of gumline deterioration, having their entire gumline treated for recession could take months or even years.

Minimally invasive “gum lift” surgical treatment options

Unlike the long healing and recovery period required by traditional gum lift procedures, new techniques called “gum lift” or “keyhole” techniques can heal literally overnight. Because treatment is much less invasive and traumatic, this new innovative technique allows for the treatment of one full arch of teeth in one session.

Even with this many teeth treated for gum recession in a single visit, patient discomfort is minimal, and healing and recovery time from the gum lift surgical technique is brief. Patients treated with this technique can resume their normal diet and routine the next morning, enjoying regular meals without having to worry about injuring their mouths.

As the name suggests, gum lift surgery occurs through a tiny incision no more than 0.1” in length. The dentist works through this incision and using special tools, shifts the receded gum tissue back to its proper height. Immediate results are achieved within minutes — some patients have the entire procedure done over a lunch hour. There are no large incisions, no post-operative sutures and virtually no recovery time. The tiny incisions used in treatment typically heal completely overnight.

How gum lift surgical treatment of receding gumlines is carried out

A dentist will numb the area to be treated with a local anesthetic. Teeth near the section of gumline that requires treatment are polished and cleaned. After that, a tiny incision, less than 0.1” long, is made in the gumline near the area to be treated. Specially designed dental tools are used to reposition the gum tissue. Collagen strips are inserted through the incision and guided into place. The collagen strip will help keep the gumline in the correct position while the body forms new collagen to replace it.

Is a receding gum lift procedure right for you?

If you suffer from receding gums, you are probably a good candidate for treatment. Receding gums are not just a cosmetic issue — they often cause tooth sensitivity and can lead to tooth damage and eventual tooth loss.
